Tusiata Avia is a poet, performer and children’s book writer. Of Samoan descent, Avia was born and raised in Christchurch. Her poetry has appeared in various literary journals and her first collection of poetry was published in 2004. Avia’s work is rich in Pacific themes and her books for children have been published in Samoan, Tongan, Cook Islands Maori, Nuiean, Tokelauan and English. Avia was awarded the 2005 Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writers’ Residency at the University of Hawai’i, and was shortlisted for the 2006 Prize in Modern Letters.

Keri Hulme’s novels, short stories and poems are widely published. Her novel, The Bone People, gained global recognition, particularly when it won the 1984 New Zealand Book Award for Fiction and the Booker Prize in 1985. Maori, Celtic and Norse mythology, in homage to her mixed heritage, are threaded through all of her writing. She has published short stories and poems in several book-length collections, as well as journals and anthologies. Her long story ‘Te Kaihau/The Windeater’ appears in Nine New Zealand Novellas (Reed, 2005).

Aroha Harris (Nga Puhi, Te Rarawa) is a writer, researcher and historian. She is a three-time finalist in the Awards for Maori Writers. Like a number of New Zealand women writers, poet and playwright Bernadette Hall did not begin to publish until her 40s, but quickly cemented her reputation as one of the country’s more distinctive poetic voices. She was the 1996 Burns Fellow at Otago University and in 2004 shared an Artists in Antarctica Fellowship with friend and collaborator, Dunedin artist Kathryn Madill. The author of nine poetry collections, her work has been published in a range of national and international anthologies. Hall was the 2006 Victoria University Writer in Residence and in 2007 held the Rathcoola Residency in Donoughmore, Ireland.

Frankie McMillan is a short story writer. and poet. She completed an MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters, and received the Creative NZ Todd Writers' Bursary in 2005. Her first book of short fiction, The Bag Lady’s Picnic and Other Stories, was published in 2001, for which she was lauded 'a strong new voice on the New Zealand literary scene.' (Penelope Bieder, Weekend Herald) In 2009 she published Dressing for the Cannibals, a collection of her poetry. McMillan teaches creative writing in Christchurch.

Becky Woodall is an aspiring novelist and poet. She placed second equal in the 2010 Going West Poetry Slam and her work is included in the 2010 New Zealand Poetry Society anthology across the fingerboards and also in the NZPC project All Together Now: A Digital Bridge for Auckland and Sydney. Most recently some of her poems have appeared on Phantom Billtickers Poetry Blog and she has performed as part of In Voice & Music with Printable Reality. She reads occassionally at the Poetry Live open mic.

Chris Price is a poet, editor and educator. Her collections of poetry include Husk (2002) and The Blind Singer (2009). She has also published an eccentric biographical dictionary that samples the lives of both real and fictional characters called Brief Lives (2006). Price has won and been shortlisted for several nationally recognized literary awards, and in 2008 she was the Auckland University Writer in Residence at the Michael King Writers’ Centre. She teaches creative writing full time at the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University of Wellington.
